Ammon Hillman retells the Gospel of James story of Mary and argues the Jerusalem temple was organized around child trafficking. Mary is dedicated at age three and placed beside the thysiastērion (θυσιαστήριον), the fumigation tent and altar where the smoke makes the voice of God audible, and the episode claims the temple raised girls it called Hebrew virgins for the same purpose other Mediterranean temples did. Those girls are called doves, peristerai (περιστεραί), the episode says the standard Greek word for ritual prostitutes, and Mary is shown learning to dance and sing with the drugs, receiving charis (χάρις) from the hand of an angel.
At twelve she becomes productive, and the priests cast lots by the rhabdos (ῥάβδος), the sacred rod. Joseph brings his rhabdos, and a dove flies out and settles over his head, so he is allotted guardianship of the girl. Mary then draws the lot for the scarlet thread and the true purple, porphyra (πορφύρα), which explains her purple fingers. The voice that tells her she has found favor and will conceive by the logos comes while she is working the purple, and the overshadowing is named with the verb episkiazo (ἐπισκιάζω), which the episode reads as the hidden act of the god.
The trial closes the episode. Joseph and Mary are given the water of the Lord’s retribution and sent into the mountain, and both return holoklēroi (ὁλόκληροι), whole, so the priests read the signs and cannot condemn them. Salome, the midwife, refuses to believe until she palpates Mary, and when she withdraws her hand it is chemically burned; she cries out and the episode links her shout to the birth cry of the maenads. The final point is that Joachim is wealthy, which only makes sense, the channel argues, because the purple and the communion were the source of the temple’s money.
