Ammon Hillman opens the first part of a series on the oldest Jewish cult by putting the whole question into one verse from the Septuagint. The Lord, it says, created drugs from the earth, kurios ektisen ek gēs pharmaka (κύριος ἔκτισεν ἐκ γῆς φάρμακα), and the person with sense does not look down on them. That line from Sirach becomes the door into a different religion, one where the one God is also the maker of the drugs. The same text then threatens to take away the pharmaka (φάρμακα) so the people cannot sing their hymns, and the stream points to related wording for chanting, apophthengomai (ἀποφθέγγομαι), to speak out plainly, as proof that drugs and hymns worked side by side in the old rite.
The evidence is gathered by searching the Greek rather than quoting theology. Exodus shows the drug workers, the pharmakoi (φαρμακοί) and the chanters called epōdoi (ἐπῳδοί), whose songs answer venom, and the Wisdom of Solomon describes a potable, beloved medicine, a pharmakon zōēs (φάρμακον ζωῆς), the drug of life. Tobit turns exorcism into a recipe: take the heart and the liver of the fish, add them to the incense left over from the burning, and burn them together so the demon Asmodeus (Ἀσμοδαῖος) is driven off, then smear the fish bile into the eyes to heal. The episode sums it up plainly: there are no drugless mysteries, and the earliest Jewish cult was born in exorcism.
The last move is the claim about the date and the language. The texts, the episode says, are second and third century, stamped by Hellenistic Egypt, where the writers of Sirach, Tobit, and Genesis sat surrounded by the Museum and by Homer. It reads the famous red heifer not as a cow but as the word for a young female, damalis (δάμαλις), behind which sits the parthenos (παρθένος), the virgin priestess, and it lines up the burning off of mortality in Deuteronomy with Demeter’s work in the Eleusinian mysteries. The conclusion runs all the way through: Judaism and Christianity grew from the same Greek crib, and the god who made the drugs is the same one the earliest texts address as Yaho.
