Video Description
At the center of this session is the Apocalypse of Paul, which Ammon Hillman translates directly from the Greek. Paul is shown being taken up into the third heaven, and the accepted letter is brought alongside it, where he already says he cannot tell whether the trip happened in the body or in the spirit. It is a fourth-century document, but the older point matters more: the prophets are named with the Greek word prophetēs (προφήτης), and in this text their songs, hymns, and magic prayers all sit together. For this reading, prophecy and magic were never two separate things.
The visions are unsettling. In a second apocalypse attached to John, the Antichristos (Ἀντίχριστος) comes with two different eyes, one like the morning star and one like a lion, and hair that flies like an arrow. The show treats that not as decoration but as code: lion and star are both signals from a mystery language. Then, in Paul’s own journey, the sun steps forward to the Pantocratōr (Παντοκράτωρ) and asks to burn the human race to ashes, while the answer it receives is makrothymia (μακροθυμία), long-hearted patience, leaving people time to turn around before the end.
The final figure stands at the thysiastērion (θυσιαστήριον), the place of sacrifices and fumigations, with a face that shines like the sun and a kithara (κιθάρα) in hand. The argument is that the key opening the gates of the underworld is not metal but the sound of that instrument, and the shout the text calls alleluia is traced to alalazō (ἀλαλάζω), the old war cry raised in Dionysian rites. Near the close, the visions include the resurrection of the dead, anastasis nekrōn (ἀνάστασις νεκρῶν), and the Sphinx being sent to the cave to raise and examine a body, then speak for the figure at the center of it all.
