The subject is the appetite of the tyrant. In this hour Ammon Hillman returns to the encomium of Chrysippus, a Hellenic Christian presbyter in Jerusalem writing about John the Baptist, and reads Herod’s birthday request, bring me the child, against its older layer. The text, he says, supplies the history the surface hides: tyrants feed on the sacrifice of children, and the purposeful starvation of whole populations is the fuel of that cult. The modern mirror image is held up beside Herod as the present catching up with the past.
The Greek gives the series its key words. The daughter of the eobolic echidna (ἔχιδνα), the one casting poison, comes forward as the new drakaina (δράκαινα), shouts and dances, and is promised as much as half the kingdom. The episode calls the whole scene the Bacchic satanic chorus, and it works through the paired terms: asōtia (ἀσωτία), the wastefulness and excess of a soul that cannot be satisfied, and the Ionic darkness, to aionion skotos (τὸ αἰώνιον σκότος), read as the tool of the rite instead of ordinary shadow. Underneath it is the guardianship of the mother and her daughter.
From there the claims run toward the blood. The show reads Eve, Eua (Εὔα), and Mary as the same priestess-type in their sources, the shout of the Bacchic woman, and Salome as the new dragon in appearance and bearing. The offering demanded for the rite is a prophet, and the episode says John the Baptist lost his head because he stood inside the same drug mystery he is usually shown opposing.
