Video Description
The episode turns Euripides’ play Ion into a family secret, reading a story the audience thinks it knows as a record of how the first ruling line of Athens actually began. Ammon Hillman retells the core event in the study’s own words: a young girl, Creusa, is assaulted by Apollo, carries the pregnancy alone, gives birth, and hides the child in the cave. For the class, the cave is not scenery. It is the adyton (ἄδυτον), the innermost holy room, and the north-facing hollow under the Cecropian rocks called Makrai is named as the spot.
From there the sources stack the same pattern. Hephaestus is shown trying to take Athena, failing, and leaving the divine seed on her thigh, which she wipes away with wool onto the earth. From that seed springs Erichthonius, the founder figure to whom Athena gives the two drops of the Gorgon’s blood, what the episode renders as stalagmos (σταλαγμός). One drop is called thanasimon (θανάσιμον), the death inducer, and the other wards off disease, and the cure is said to pass down through the line until the same mixed gift sits in the queen’s hands.
The close ties the blood to the trap the show repeats across its episodes. Athena wears the skin of the Gorgon, the deros (δέρος) that becomes the aegis (αἰγίς), and the line that is born from the assault becomes the guardian of the Virgin on the hill. The reading then moves to the language of eating the flesh and drinking the blood, which the show claims belongs to the echidna priesthood and to the drug itself rather than to the later theology. The result is framed as a history of the earliest Athenian dynasty, written in Greek and built on the blood of the violated woman.
