Video Description
The episode turns an interview clip into a case study about who gets to call themselves a classicist. Ammon Hillman plays a moment in which Dennis R. MacDonald tells a host that he learned both classics and Bible at Harvard, and then goes to the record. The list pulled up on screen points to Bob Jones University, a Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary, and a Harvard doctorate in religion, not in classical philology. From there the show builds its claim: a person can hold New Testament credentials and still not be the thing the on-screen conversation said he was.
The language work is the test. The episode turns to the word christos (χριστός), which the interviewee reads as an anointing of oil. Against that, the hour lines up the primary sources: pharmacon (φάρμακον), the drug, joined to christon (χριστόν) in Euripides, the line asking whether something is a salve or a drug drink, and Medea saying she will christ her gifts with poisons. What remains is the drug.
