Video Description
The workshop opens on one of the channel’s repeated teaching points: the work here rolls past the modern textbooks and starts where the philosophers of the Greek-speaking world said to start. It settles on Xenophon’s romance for young readers, because the argument is that the old tale of Daphnis and Chloe feels closer to a student than Shakespeare does. The reason is eros (ἔρως), and the question the old books ask is not what is love but who is Eros.
Ammon Hillman then moves to the parts of the text that the classroom materials leave out. The channel reads eroticon pharmakon (ἐρωτικὸν φάρμακον), the erotic drug, in the romances, and describes how the drug is prepared and applied to the garment and to the body as christing. Aphrodite is called the huntress who must be approached subtly, and the cure names Artemis as sotera (σώτειρα), the savior. Around it the stream points to the abortifacient plants and the story of a Spartan girl who performed her own abortion in silence, the specialists who knew the drugs.
The last section turns to Priapus and the stone phallus. The audience is asked to show the actual artifacts, and the word olisbos (ὄλισβος) is named for the device. In the reading, the phallus belongs at the center of the rite, in the temple of the muse, as a magical symbol for the family and the future. The session also returns to the channel’s fixed vocabulary: the word christ sits in the same sentences as the drugs, and the stream promises to read all of it from the Greek.

another unit. You need to read unit two tomorrow, right? And at the time that you read it, go back.
After you read the unit, go back and look at unit one again and do some of the exercises, right?

foreign than Shakespeare is. I can give you the same student. Think about this for a minute as
a student. I can give you Romeo and Juliet, and I can give you Xenophon. You as an English reader,
just a translation of Xenophon, right? You can read it and read Romeo and Juliet, and you will
be more drawn, more familiar with the world of Xenophon. Shakespeare will feel like an alien
landscape to you, and that’s not because of the these and the thous. It’s because of a universal
power of the language. This language is conveying eros. What is love? All of these, the question is
