Video Description
Ammon Hillman opens a late-night edition with the serpent queen herself. Reading from an archaic Orphic account, the episode describes Echidna (Ἔχιδνα), a nymph and an oracular portent, half maiden and half serpent, with darting eyes, swift, flesh-eating, and unaging, a cave-dweller whom the episode calls a dracaina (δράκαινα). The word, the episode says, has no English equal: it names the queen who stands at the head of the mystery rite, the serpent queen whose body gives the communion. For a historical anchor it points to Aeschylus, whose Clytemnestra is called a dracaina, the queen who dreams of a serpent biting her breast and mixing blood, venom, and milk.
The duel is drawn from the Acts of Philip. Jesus casts lots to send the apostles out, Philip weeps when he draws Greece, and his sister Mariamne goes along as the priestess who prepares the bread and the salt, the one the episode calls the chosen lady. Told to hide her femininity and keep pace with her brother, she enters the wilderness of the dracinae, and the episode tracks the side stories: a leopard and a goat that speak in a human voice after the animal has been pacified with drugs, the forced domestication the episode links to Circe soothing the wolves and lions in Homer’s Odyssey with kaka pharmaka (κακὰ φάρμακα), wicked drugs.
The climax is the fight with the great serpent. A dark wind rises, and out of it comes a dragon whose black coils gleam like heated bronze; Philip tells the group to pray over the eucharized cup, sprinkle the sign of the cross in the air, and the lightning blinds the dragon and its attendants. The apostles kill the serpents and shut the holy place, and the crowd answers by stripping Mariamne and shaming her as the one who served as the cup within the rite. The episode’s closing claim is that this is what Christianity did everywhere it went: destroy the older oracles, as it did with the Pythia, and crucify its own people on the way.

will grow back. Do you see? It’s the language that hijacked the history. You have accurate
