Video Description
The second night of the two-part event goes into the making of the eunuch. Ammon Hillman reads Lucian, a writer contemporary with the early Christian texts, on the festival days of the Great Mother. The Greek names the holy ones Galoi (Γάλλοι), the people who undergo castration in her service, and says they carry out the rites themselves: teleusi ta orgia (τελοῦσι τὰ ὄργια), they complete the initiations. The passage is read piece by piece, with a note that its vowel sounds are Ionian and not pure Attic, and that such dialect shifts carry meaning.
The text then shows the moment of the act in a public, organized festival. As the flutes and drums play, a young man, neanias (νεανίας), is caught by the mania (μανία), tears off his clothes, screams, runs into the middle of the crowd, and cuts off his testicles, carrying them in his hand through the town to the house where he will be given the women’s clothing and the women’s kit, the kosmos (κόσμος). From there the episode turns to the eunuch’s place in the wider world: the scholia credit the saying on Apollo’s temple, know thyself, to a eunuch boy, and a second source describes a chief cook, archimageiros (ἀρχιμάγειρος), the same terminology the Septuagint uses for a Mithraic-cult dignitary.
The closing material deals with the chemistry and the consequences. A pseudo-Galen remedy for keeping the breasts soft calls for plasters with the hemlock, koneion (κώνειον), and for Christing the chest with blood so the breasts do not grow, which the episode reads as body-engineering inherited from the poisoned-arrow priestesses. It then explains why some eunuchs kept a sexual drive: the job was only half done, a hemiteles (ἡμιτελής), half-finished cutting, when one testicle had not yet descended. The claim made throughout is that Daniel, the apostles, and the blessed eunuchs of the gospels belong to this same older temple framework that Judaism and Christianity later absorbed.
