The dragon is described in the Greek as the great and terribly frightening serpent-midnight with skin that flashes many colors, poikilos (ποικίλος), golden hair and beard, teeth that shine like lightning, and pearl eyes ringed in silver. From the nostrils comes the flash of fire, phlox pyros (φλόξ πυρός), the same fire the episode places in the eyes of Jesus and in the Euripides Bacchae, tying the dragon to Dionysus and the power that rises through the earth. The Greek is also used to connect Odyssean necromancy to the same ancient craft.
The close is about the seal. When the virgin makes the sign of the cross on her forehead and body, the show reads it as the seal, sphragis (σφραγίς), a defensive gesture against the dragon and a drug-working in its own right. The dragon’s breath is described as a fumigant that brings forgetfulness, and Genesis is read through the same lens, a rite of enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
