Video Description
Ammon Hillman reads the Acts of Philip from the black Bible, the stack of early texts the canon cut away. The hour starts at the end. A powerful husband seizes his wife by the hair and drags her through the street, shouting that he will watch her have intercourse with the strangers who are magi. She has joined the apostles Philip, Bartholomew, and Mariamne, and the text names the offense in the Greek: porneuousa (πορνεύουσα), having sex. The husband says outright that the Christians have the power to break up relationships, so he has to be shown what his own wife is doing.
The city responds as a community. The proconsul calls the apostles seducers and drug users, magoi (μάγοι), men who make women and children wander, and orders them tortured. Philip, Bartholomew, and Mariamne are stripped, beaten, bound by the feet, and dragged around town to the temple gate, where a crowd of seven thousand gathers. They are shut up in the temple of Echidna (Ἔχιδνα), the half-virgin, half-viper goddess of that place, and the episode says her priestesses are the oracular judges, the local administration of justice. The charge against the apostles is concrete: they killed the serpents who descend from the goddess, and they stopped the temple’s wine and the dreaming it brings.
The episode’s closing claim is that Christianity is sex and drugs in one operation. The seed of the dragon, described in the text, is epithumia (ἐπιθυμία), sexual desire, and the cup of Lady Babylon is porneia (πορνεία). Philip prays to Christ Jesus as the one who frees through baptism from the slavery of death, and the episode reads the same promise in the Eleusinian mysteries. The baptism of the eunuch in Acts becomes the visual: Philip and the eunuch go down into the water together, the spirit carries the apostle away into the void, and the eunuch comes up alone and goes on his way. The hour ends with the flat thesis: the first Christian cult is a drug-using sex cult, a mystery like the ones around it.
